What is Functional Medicine
We often use the terms “Naturopathic Medicine” and “Functional Medicine” interchangeably because there are so many similarities between the two systems.
Both systems use:
- A Holistic Approach: Naturopathic and functional medicine take a holistic approach to health, addressing the root causes of illness and considering the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit. This approach may resonate with individuals seeking comprehensive, whole-person care.
- Preventive Care: Naturopathic doctors (NDs) and functional providers prioritize preventive care and empowering patients to take an active role in their health. By identifying and addressing risk factors before they manifest as illness, naturopathic medicine emphasizes long-term wellness and disease prevention.
- Natural Therapies: Naturopathic medicine and (sometimes) functional medicine utilize natural therapies, such as dietary changes, herbal supplements, acupuncture, and lifestyle modifications, to support the body’s innate healing processes. Many people appreciate the focus on natural, minimally invasive treatments with fewer side effects.
- Individualized Treatment: Naturopathic doctors and functional providers tailor treatment plans to each individual’s unique needs, considering factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and environmental influences. This personalized approach may lead to more effective outcomes and greater patient satisfaction.
- Patient-Centered Care: Naturopathic medicine and functional medicine emphasize patient-centered care, with NDs spending ample time with patients to understand their concerns, goals, and preferences. This collaborative approach fosters a strong doctor-patient relationship and empowers patients to make informed decisions about their health.
- Integration of Conventional and Alternative Therapies: Naturopathic doctors are trained to integrate both conventional and alternative therapies, drawing from a diverse toolkit to address each patient’s needs. This integrative approach allows for a comprehensive treatment strategy that may combine the best of both worlds.
Differences between Functional Medicine and Naturopathic Medicine
- Time in Practice: Naturopathic Medicine has deep roots in traditional healing practices, such as herbalism, that have been utilized for centuries. Functional medicine is a newer offshoot of conventional medicine that builds upon these time-tested naturopathic approaches.
- Scope of Practice: Naturopathic doctors (NDs) undergo rigorous training in accredited naturopathic medical programs and are licensed healthcare practitioners. They are trained to diagnose and treat a wide range of health conditions using natural therapies. Functional medicine practitioners may come from diverse backgrounds, including medical doctors, chiropractors, and nutritionists, and may specialize in functional medicine alongside their primary training. This might mean that a provider takes a weekend course in functional medicine and then may offer functional services in their practice. Unlike Naturopathic medical schools, functional medicine training programs are not consistently regulated.
What are some more elements of both Naturopathic and Functional Medicine?
In the world of alternative healthcare, naturopathic medicine and functional medicine stand out as valuable approaches. They shed light on how our body systems connect and help uncover what’s really causing our health issues.
